The labour market is changing rapidly. The number of job vacancies is falling, while unemployment is slightly on the rise. At the same time, artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly significant role in shifting jobs and required skills.
According to the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), at the end of June there were just slightly more vacancies (388,500) than unemployed people (386,000). Back in 2022, the gap was much wider. Although the labour market is still considered tight – with over 75% of Dutch people aged 15 to 75 in work – the trend is clear: that tightness is easing.
One key driver behind this shift is technological advancement. Especially AI and automation are causing jobs to disappear or change. This affects not only administrative and creative roles, but even within the IT sector, the number of jobs has dropped by 8,000.
Still, AI also brings opportunities. According to CBS chief economist Peter Hein van Mulligen, the real issues lie elsewhere: “The tightness in the labour market and lagging productivity are now the real challenges – and AI could actually help ease those.”
Those looking to adapt to this new reality would be wise to invest in digital skills. Retraining and upskilling – particularly in IT – are more relevant than ever. The Azure Academy responds to this need with practical, hands-on IT training for both new and existing employees, helping both organisations and jobseekers to move forward with confidence.
